LAHORE: Teachers play a key role in the progress and development of a society as they are responsible for character building of the children and equipping them with knowledge, Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said.
“Teachers have always enjoyed deep respect in every society and Islam also laid great emphasis on their dignity. The goal of national development cannot be achieved without ensuring due status to the teachers in the society,” he said in a message on Teachers Day observed on Saturday.
Shahbaz Sharif said that education is the secret of success and only those nations have progressed which have taken solid measures for development of education and granted due status to the teachers in the society. He said that educational targets can be achieved only if teachers pay due attention to their responsibilities and are free from social and economic problems.
The chief minister said that unfortunately effective measures were not taken in the past for the welfare and betterment of teachers. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government in Punjab has, however, paid due attention to the uplift of education sector and welfare of teachers, he added.
Shahbaz Sharif said that under a comprehensive policy, a record increase has been made in the budget for education sector and literacy rate has been improved through educational reforms while salaries and incentives of teachers have also been increased and cash prizes of tens of millions rupees have been given to them for showing better academic results.
The chief minister said that like developed societies, the dignity and esteem of teachers will have to be ensured in the country. He made an appeal to students to show due respect to their teachers as it is essential for success.
