RAWALPINDI: Solid and practical steps are need of the hour to shun the gender discrimination and differences so that the women could play a participatory role in strengthening national economy and could have self-reliance with regard to earning bread and butter for their families.
The speakers stated this at a seminar held in connection with the International Women’s Day here on March 08. The seminar was organised by the Women Wing of Pakistan Aman Party at the Aman House. Pakistan Aman Party Chairman Haji Mohammad Gulzar Awan, Begum Shaheen Bashir, Begum Musharraf Jehan, Miss Shamaila Noreen, Miss Azra Bibi, Sobia Batool, Syed Atif Raza, Malik Pervaiz, Athar Hussain, Shahid Waheed and Malik Yasir spoke on the occasion.
Haji Mohammad Gulzar Awan said the participation of women in the economic decision-making in Pakistan was very low, placing the country on the 127th position out of a total 130 countries. “We must shift from action-less speeches to practical steps to give women their rights,” he said. “Women in our rural setup are not given even the most basic rights like college level education. In this respect, our actions do not match with what we say.”
Haji Gulzar Awan said that Pakistani women lack substantive protection against domestic abuse and suffer a lot from brutal punishments for acting against the wishes of their elders. “We have to give the women their due rights and let them participate in all fields of life, if we look towards a prosperous Pakistan,” he remarked.
Begum Shaheen Bashir, Begum Musharraf Jehan and other speakers said that the government should devise a policy and strategy helpful for women to have respectable place in all fields of life. They said without giving equal rights and opportunities to women, the country cannot make progress.
