Pakistani MP wants special package for economic uplift of women

Maverick Report

ISLAMABAD: President of Pakistan Muslim League Senator Salim Saifullah Khan on March 08 asked the government to announce a special package for the economic uplift of the women, the worst sufferers of the skyrocketing price-hike and terrorism incidents.

“Women have been the worst victims of the 400 per cent rise in the price-hike. Moreover, the terrorism incidents have also hit the women hard as mostly the victims of such attacks were men and now their women have to work for their children. Since the government has not announced any economic package for such women, they are suffering the most,” said Saifullah while addressing a meeting of the PML Women’s Wing at the PML House in connection with the International Women’s Day.

President of PML Women’s Wing Yaqoot Jamil-ur-Rehman chaired the meeting.

Saifullah said his party had already rejected Rs1.02 raise in the power tariff which had no rationale. He said the government, during its past two years in power, had totally failed in addressing the issues being faced by the women.

“The sincerity of this regime is reflected by the fact that it has miserably failed in appointing anyone as minister for women development and this slot is vacant for past one year. The matter of the women’s rights has been left to the bureaucrats who have no interest in doing so,” he said. “The ignorance of women rights on part of a party which was once led by Benazir Bhutto is pinching.”

Calling upon the government to announce a special package for the women for loans with zero interest, Saifullah said this would help empower women and would also open new vistas of economic uplift for women. He stressed the need for ensuring delivery of inheritance rights to the common women, saying that Islam had given the right to inheritance some 1,400 years ago but the Muslims were not willing to follow the practice.

Lauding the contributions made by the PML government for women empowerment, Saifullah said his party had taken practical steps for the empowerment of women. “Not only the women were allotted special seats in all the decision-making bodies including the National Assembly and Senate, but the women were also allocated 33 per cent share in local governments, which ensured women empowerment in true sense. Moreover, most anti-women laws were amended and rights were ensured for women at all forums. The women were also awarded scholarships for higher education.”

Speaking on the occasion, Yaqoot Jamil-ur-Rehman said the women’s day reminded that Islam had given respect, reverence and all rights to the women some 1,400 years ago. “Besides, the religion of Islam also endowed the women with the right to inheritance so as they could be truly empowered and could play their role in the society as a productive citizen and could also be included the decision-making process,” she said.
